How can I tell if my printer is hooked up correctly?

If your printer is not hooked up properly, then it may not work. If you have a wired connection, ensure that all of the wires are properly plugged in. You may need to unplug everything, restart your computer, plug the wires back in and then try to print your work again. You may be experiencing a minor connectivity issue that is resolved by rebooting the system. Whether you have a wired or a wireless printer, you should check the Printers and Devices tab on your computer. When you don’t see your printer listed there, you know the connection is faulty. Also, you may see a warning sign or exclamation mark next to the printer. Clicking on that can provide you with steps to fix it.

How do I know if the problem is with my printer or my computer?

This question is tricky to answer, but it is an imperative one. Even if you call a customer service representative, that person will want to quickly figure out where the problem is coming from. Also, in the event that you need to bring the unit in for repairs, you need to know if you should bring your computer, printer or both. Checking the printers and devices section of your computer can provide you with some hints. Some computers have status screens on them. That screen may also tell you from where the problem is originating.

What are some of the basic problems that my printer could experience?

One of the basic issues is connectivity. On top of that, your printer may not have enough ink in it to complete the job. You can check the ink status to see if that is the issue on your computer or your printer. Let’s say that you are out of colored ink, and that is the reason why the document won’t print. Go back into your printer settings, and choose to have it printed in black ink only. Even if it’s not exactly what you want, it will hold you over until you get more color in. The printer could also be out of paper.

How do I resolve a paper jam?

Many people run into problems with their printers because the paper is jammed. Some printers provide you with instructions on how to resolve the printer jam. Reading the manufacturer’s guide is wise because different printers can require different steps. If you do not remove the paper jam properly, you could end up damaging the printer even more or entirely breaking it. Usually, you will need to gently remove the paper from the printer by opening a back or side door. After that, smooth out the remaining paper to ensure that the same problem does not happen again.

Should I keep trying to print even if it’s not working?

While you are trying all of these different methods, you may desperately hit Print over and over again to try to get your document to come out. However, doing so is just going to cause more and more documents to pile up in your printing queue. If you have too much happening on the computer at once, it can slow the system down. Call your manufacturer to find out what type of service is available, save your work to a disk and go elsewhere to print for the day.
