Ask This When Creating an Online Dating Profile

Online dating has become extremely popular in the past few years– some would even argue it is the best and most popular way to meet a partner nowadays. However, many that want to try online dating are intimidated by all of the options, and therefore never try it in the first place. Others may have had a bad experience with Tinder or another app more suited for hookups, and they avoid all potential future experiences with online dating like the plague. In this situation, one has to understand that not all apps and sites are the same.

If you’re ready to jump in, let’s address some common questions about how to put together a good online dating profile.

What are the best pictures for me to post on a profile?

The answer to this question depends upon a variety of factors. A study by Wired found that 45 percent of the most contacted straight women on online dating services used selfies for their profile pic, but they’re much less popular for men. In pictures, you should be looking at the camera, and you should smile with your teeth showing. Remember that potential matches will be looking for pictures that look natural – especially those that show you participating in hobbies or fun activities.

What activities should I list on my profile?

As with pictures, do not post things on your profile that you do not really do or enjoy. With that being said, there are certain activities that garner more interest than others. For example, surfing and yoga are very popular activities for both genders; meditation is popular for females; photography is popular for males; and tattoos are popular for both genders, although much more so for males. Music tends to be a popular interest in general. Karaoke, on the other hand, is not so popular. All in all, do what you love and the right partner will find you!

What are online dating profile turnoffs?

There are a number of profile turnoffs other than not having the best profile picture. For example, strong piousness—“I live for God”– is likely to turn potential suitors off. Poor grammar is often a turnoff. Even the weirdest things can be turnoffs; mentioning that you have or like cats is fine, but many find that calling one’s cats “my” cats is a turnoff.

    What should I not mention?

As with the aforementioned turnoffs, there are certain attitudes or things that you don’t discuss on an online dating profile. Do not talk about any of your former partners; don’t discuss money, kids, or anything that may happen well in the future; don’t sound desperate; don’t share too much private information; don’t ramble on about yourself; and don’t act condescendingly towards anyone using the service or anyone dating online in general. Also, as for what to mention, don’t leave areas blank. It makes you look secretive.

Do I have to be really attractive to be successful?

Not true necessarily. A study by OKCupid found that women on their service prefer to contact men of “average” looks more often than they do the “most attractive” men. So not all hope is lost if you’re not Leonardo DiCaprio. Just be yourself and the rest will work itself out.
